ok ok ok so. after leandra dies, pippa takes it really hard. it’s probably the lowest point of her life, and varric and fenris end up having to help look after because she’s so depressed she’s not eating or even talking. she’s just lying in bed and staring at the wall. varric writes to the warden-commander (abbey @purahs’ aelwyn mahariel) to ask for special permission for carver to come back to kirkwall, which is granted, and it’s this that helps her start to recover. (the first thing carver does is run a bath and dump her into it unceremoniously and tell her she smells worse than biscuit)

one of the first times she leaves the house is to meet with seneschal bran at the viscount’s keep on behalf of her brother. fenris, sebastian and carver all go with her, and on her way out, aveline gets pippa’s attention and offers condolences for leandra’s death.

and pippa just. loses it. it’s probably the first time sebastian (and anyone in the vicinity familiar with her) has ever heard her raise her voice. it starts small and builds until she’s literally screaming in front of the entire keep about how it’s aveline’s fault and that she hates her, she’s shaking and sobbing and carver picks her up and carries her outside and she never speaks to aveline again.

The Keep was stifling. Pippa hated visiting, but she had business with the seneschal on behalf of her brother. Carver was at her back, and she stayed close to him, with Fenris, Varric and Sebastian following closely behind. Thankfully, the meeting was over swiftly, and she hurried back out onto the main landing, desperate to be anywhere but in this building.

“Pippa?”

The familiar and wholly unwelcome voice of the Guard-Captain sounded behind her, and Pippa ignored it, halfway down the first flight of stairs before Aveline called out again.

“Pippa, do you have a moment?”

Pippa inhaled sharply, then spun on her heel to see Aveline hot on the group’s heels. “What do you want?” She asked, sharply.

Aveline looked a little taken aback, but continued. “I came to give my condolences. I’ve seen your brother, but I had yet to run into you and offer the same.”

Pippa blinked a couple of times, waiting for her to continue, but no further words came, and the rage started to bubble in Pippa’s chest as she blinked tears from her eyes.

“Condolences?” She said, hands balling into fists. “My mother is dead, nearly fifteen women are dead, because you and your guardsman did nothing!” She was aware her voice was getting louder, that a couple of people had turned to see what was happening, but she didn’t care. “You took over from a man so corrupt he made bankers look like innocent babes, you swore things would change, and you swore you would make this city safer, but all you did, all you do is hand off the work to my brother because why do any of your own work when you make the Hawkes do it for you?”

Aveline had gone pale, and Pippa could feel her entire group tensed around her, completely nonplussed as to what to do with her.

“You’ve even said it yourself, that your men don’t get to Lowtown as often as they should. Maybe you and your men should think about the people in this city that actually need protecting, rather than stand idly outside the chantry and complain that there’s never anything interesting happening - people are dying because of your indifference!"

Carver put a hand on her shoulder and she shrugged it off angrily. “My mother is dead!” Pippa repeated. “My mother is dead and all you can do is say “I’m sorry,” as if that will bring her back, as if that will bring any of them back? Emeric started chasing this years ago, insisting that the murders were connected. You told Garrett about it when we very first moved into Hightown. I was there. You had the evidence in your hand and you did NOTHING!” Her entire body started to shake, stomach in a furious knot, the grief and rage making her head swim.

Carver had grabbed her now, holding her back, and Pippa struggled against him, screaming at Aveline. Every eye inside the keep was on them. “She’s dead! She’s dead and it’s your fault! I hate you! I’ll never forgive you! MY MOTHER IS DEAD BECAUSE YOU DIDN’T CARE!”

Pippa collapsed, shrieking with grief, and warm, strong arms scooped her up, carrying her swiftly out of the Keep and placing her on the stone tiles outside, where she swayed on the spot for a second and promptly vomited.
